Källmyrskogen Habitat Forest

Källmyrskogen – a forest where time has moved slowly.

In the northern landscapes of Jämtland, Sweden, where marshlands give way to endless forests, lies Källmyrskogen – a forest where time moves slowly. The land carries echoes of Sámi culture, ancient reindeer migration routes, and the quiet persistence of people living close to nature. Beneath the tall spruces and pines, the forest whispers of a past where hunting, fishing, and timber framed life for generations.

This landscape is shaped by contrasts: wide lowland bogs teeming with birdlife, river valleys once used for timber floating, and rugged mountain ridges marking the border with Norway. It is also home to Sweden’s densest bear population – a presence felt even here, where upturned ant hills reveals how the forest continues to nourish predator and prey alike.

The forest property consists of a mix of spruce, pine, and broadleaf stands, with medium to high site quality. The age distribution is skewed, with a significant share of old forest exceeding 100 years. This structure provides valuable habitats for biodiversity while also maintaining high carbon storage potential. Located in a commercially active forestry region, Källmyrskogen stands out as a remnant of once common older forest types that have become increasingly scarce.

Fossagrim and the landowner have entered into an exclusive preservation contract securing the forest for a minimum of 30 years. During this period, no logging or land conversion will take place, ensuring continuous growth and delievery of ecosystem services and measurable sustainability impact, protection of ecological values, and natural carbon sequestration.

Källmyrskogen will thus serve as a Fossagrim Habitat Forest – preserved for the benefit of biodiversity, climate, and future generations.
