Vehusnuten Habitat Forest
Vehusnuten Habitat Forest in Seljord, Telemark, Norway
Vehusnuten Habitat Forest is located in Åmotsdal in Seljord, Telemark, directly adjacent to the Kvistaul Habitat Forest. Together, the areas form a larger, forest landscape in high-altitude terrain, approximately 600–700 meters above sea level, with significant ecological value and long-term forest continuity.
The forest at Vehusnuten is dominated by mature spruce, with interspersed deciduous trees and a rich understory. While much of the surrounding region is actively harvested, the remaining forests are characterized by large, old trees, diverse structures, and natural transitions between forest, streams, and slopes. Forests of this kind are particularly important habitats for a wide range of species – and among the most effective natural carbon stores on land.
Vehusnuten lies within a cultural landscape rich in history and mythology. Åmotsdal is closely associated with Norway’s hardingfiddle tradition and the legendary fiddler Myllarguten. Local folklore tells that he learned to play from the Fossegrim himself – in the streams and river gorges of this very landscape. Here, nature, culture, and history are woven together, giving the project a unique identity.
Fossagrim and the landowner have entered into and committed to an exclusive, long-term agreement that secures continued, undisturbed forest development, conservation of natural values, and natural carbon sequestration for a minimum of 30 years. Vehusnuten will serve as a Fossagrim Habitat Forest, where the forest is allowed to grow and evolve on nature’s own terms.Description coming soon.
